Following his outstanding achievement at SkillBuild 2016, gold medallist Will Emerton is on course for a stellar career in roofing.
A student from Leeds College of Building, Will’s talents were evident both in the regional heats and during the intense competition final where he created an exceptional competition piece. In addition to being an ambassador for his college, Will has also recently assumed the role of Contracts Manager at Emerton Roofing (Western) Ltd based in Nantwich, Cheshire.
Will’s journey to roofing success began with his Level 3 NVQ in Roof Slating and Tiling, during which he learned vital practical training and theory. Whilst at college, Will was able to advance his slating skills even further, courtesy of SIGA Natural Slate donated by SIG Roofing Academy. It was evident that this added knowledge of slating helped separate Will from his competitors and even his brother – also a SkillBuild finalist.
Commenting on his competitive advantage, Will said: “SIG Roofing Academy’s donated slate played a key role in my success. Being able to work with and practice with the slates over and over again, provided me with far more advanced roofing skills than I would have been able to achieve otherwise.”
Following his success at SkillBuild, Will is now on course to take on his father’s role of Managing Director at Emerton Western. When asked about his long term goals Will says: “I want to take over from my Dad and run the company, keeping the focus on heritage and complex roofing – which is mainly slate – just like we have done for over 91 years.”
Will adds: “It was important for me to learn the more traditional roofing skills as I wanted to be respected by my colleagues and I didn’t want to go straight into the office based job. My father and grandfather learnt their trade on the roof and I want to be able to join the business, qualified and ready to deliver the same great standards of roofing that they always have.”
With over 50 participants in the regional heats and final of this year’s roofing competition, SkillBuild continues to help raise the bar on roofing skills, and in doing so, create the role models needed to inspire the next generation of roofers. The competitions assess an individual’s knowledge, practical skills and employability attributes against a set of strict criteria. Delivered by CITB, SkillBuild covers ten craft occupations; including Bricklaying, Carpentry, Stonemasonry and Roofing which is run by NFRC. The competition comprises of regional heats from April to June each year, culminating in a national final.
Leeds College of Building has been able to offer their students greater hands on experience as part of their NVQ in Roof Slating and Tiling due to the SIGA Natural Slate donated by the SIG Roofing Academy. Working with the National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC) as part of their Slate Focus group, SIG Roofing Academy is working with colleges across the UK to help reduce the shortage of roofing slate skills and to improve the standard of slate training in colleges across the UK.
